Multiverse Music Launches ‘Caravan Recordings’

From the stable that brings you the highly respected imprints Tectonic, ‘Earwax and Vertical Sound comes a brand-new label, Caravan Recordings.

This month it brings us great pleasure to announce our new label ‘Caravan’. Not happy with just pursuing the very best in dubstep and breaks we are now venturing into new territory with Caravan pushing deep, organic techno. Set up by Bristol-based October, aka Julian Smith, Caravan is an outlet for his own productions as well as various other new artists who fit his particular remit.

Caravan's forthcoming schedule includes tracks and remixes from October, Peter Kruder, Ripperton, TG (Four:Twenty) and Empty_Set and from early reactions from the scene's top stalwarts we seem set to divert even more attention to our forward thinking musical output.

“In Bed with October”

October Who? Julian Smith aka October

Where? Born in Turkey then moved to Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Holland eventually settling in Bristol, UK.

What? 90’s D&B DJ then more recently breaks DJ & Producer (Dangerous Drums / Vertical Sound / Zoo / Drum&Breaks), broken beat producer (Fluid Ounce) and finally, here we are, settled on Techno (label boss, producer, dj).

Why? Internal drive to create new sounds and explore different techniques.

How? VCR source material & old, broken, 70's noise-emitting analogue synths recorded on reel-to-reel, touch of analogue overdrive, nice bit of valve compression, through desk EQ and into logic...

Present? Label boss, writer and producer for Caravan.

Future? E.P on Ripperton’s label (Perspectiv recordings), remix for Steve Lawler & of course more Caravan!

CVAN001; October - Three Drops / Homosapiens / There’s a glitch in my soup (Digital Only)

“Really love the October - Three Drops - Caravan release... just special” Peter Kruder

“Really like the 3 tracks in there very deep organic techno full club support” Laurent Garnier

“No. 04 in my latest charts. What a superb 1st release! I am impressed.” Thomas Schumacher

“NICE ... VERY GOOD RECORD” Steve Lawler

“This release is absolutely fantastic! I love every track! Good luck for the start of this new label! Full support!” Ripperton (Lazy Fat People)

October 3 drops

‘3 Drops’, the label’s first release, perfectly epitomises the deep and the organic. Featuring three tracks which combine dancefloor sensibility, live percussion, Detroit vibes and European production techniques, the result is a collection of wonderful, memorable and useable tracks.

The title track is a slow burning slab of 4/4 that wriggles and shifts around an insistent, nagging bass groove, with the likes of Martin Landsky and Slam ranking amongst its fans.

‘Homosapiens’ starts off with a thick, US-style groove which subtly builds with layers of smooth percussion before releasing a synth line Martin Buttrich would be proud of.

Finally, things draw to a close with the superbly-titled ‘There’s A Glitch In My Soup’. On heavy rotation from none other than Thomas Schumacher, this is a driving track with a liberal smattering of clicks, pops and squeaks, used tastefully in October’s own inimitable style.

Just Out On Tectonic

2562

“deep techno dub step -
brilliant”

Laurent Garnier

After the last superbly-received 'Channel Two/Circulate' release on Tectonic, which picked up support from the likes of Jay Haze, Akufen and Innervisions' Marcus Worgull, Dutch legend 2562 is again drafted in to provide their latest release.

First up is 'Kameleon', which sets a rattling bongo loop against a smooth low-end and sparse beats before spacious 'Detroit' chords enter the mix - sure to be another favourite with the more adventurous house and techno DJs...

Meanwhile, 'Channel One' takes in a similar blend of scattered broken beats and deep synths to its predecessor, 'Channel Two', although winds up sounding somewhat deeper in the process.

Another killer from one of dubstep's most exciting new producers, and already featured on Hyperdub boss Kode 9's Sonar CD mix.

Next on Tectonic: Pinch Album “Underwater Dancehall”

Watch out for label boss Pinch’s debut album coming next on Tectonic Recordings with preceding Ltd Edition album sampler.

Pinch is best known for helping establish Bristol's healthy dubstep scene with his legendary Subloaded, Dubloaded and Context nights. He also runs our Tectonic and 'Earwax imprints, co-founded Subtext, and produces and remixes for labels such as Planet Mu.

His first solo release, 'Qawwali' (Planet Mu), received airplay on Radio 1 from a number of different shows including The Breezeblock, Giles Peterson and Rob Da Bank. The follow up, Punisher/Punisher VIP (also on Mu), came out in Sept '06 with a Loefah/Skream remix 12" shortly after. Just Out On ‘Earwax
earwax Its grim up north eh lad? No matter though, as Manchester’s MRK1 pulls out another quality release for us ‘earwax southerners..

‘Bones’ is a big-boy banger of a tune - drop heavy, run for cover bassline business – no messing about, just draw it back and run again. You can hear hints of Coki and Skream in this one, but there’s no mistaking MRK1s tight production ethic and his characteristic sound palette. It might not win many prizes for innovation but there is no doubt that ‘Bones’ will set off the dancefloor every time. Currently getting plays from Pinch, Skream, Distance, Cyrus and many others.

Flip for something quite different – you haven’t read the label wrong – this track is also by MRK1… ‘Steppa Delights’ is a cheeky lil’ 4/4 dub number that perfectly crosses into dubstep sets, being at 140bpm. Laid back on every front other than the bass weight, this rhythm is an excellent exercise in gut wrenching sub power and soothing melody – one for the late night skankers. Being played by old school dub heads such as Dubkasm and new school dubsteppers such as Skull Disco’s Appleblim.

Focus on: 30hz

Now we haven’t talked a great deal so far about 30Hz (aka James Ginzburg) yet he is at the very backbone of this entire musical operation.

30hz

At the end of 2003, 30Hz founded our cutting edge breaks imprint Vertical Sound. Originally an outlet for his own top-draw dance floor bangers, the label quickly diversified to include other producers such as Smithmonger , Circuit Breaker , Baobinga & Id and release underground anthems such as The Body Snatcher's "Rip Shit Up", 30Hz & Vlad's "Get Low" which for weeks held the top position in Beatport's all around sales charts and 30Hz's 'No Man's Land' which found its way into the classic Xbox game 'Project Gotham 360'.

In 2004, 30Hz helped launch the Dubstep label Tectonic, contributing alongside Pinch under the guise of 'P. Dutty' for the immense 'War Dub'/ 'Alien Tongue' release. The label has gone from strength to strength now being one of the most respected labels within the dubstep scene.

Listen/buy Tectonic catalogue

Known for his quick-mixing bass-heavy DJ style, 30Hz has become one of the DJ's to look out for, lighting up gigs across Australia, Europe, and North America – and performing numerous times on BBC Radio 1 including a live broadcast from London's Fabric on Annie Nightingale 's show earlier this year.

2007 has seen 30Hz sign to Meat Katie 's Lot 49 imprint, and recorded a series of singles including the "Space Age EP", "Mutton" and his Remix of D Ramirez & Meat Katie's "Stop The Revolution". He has now finished his full length LP, "Electric Sheep", for Lot49 which is due out mid November led by the vocal anthem "Daddio" featuring the vocal talents of Yolanda ( Bugz in the Attic, Massive Attack etc...) The LP demonstrates 30Hz broad musical interests and influences while keeping firmly rooted in the sound system experience.

30Hz Myspace

Other projects include being one half of dynamic duo The Body Snatchers, whom have produced remixes for some of the leading lights of dance music, such as Ferry Corsten and Krafty Kuts and have recently signed an album deal with Aquasky's Passenger Records.
